What is in a name?
Hello everyone,
How are you doing on this
day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord.
Primary Text
“There came a man sent
from God, whose name was John.” John 1v6 (AMP)
I pose the question –
what is in a name? And the answer from God’s point of view – a lot! In the eyes
of God, we find that names are used to identify the purpose and character of a
person. To this end, scripture shows how God gives names to people and changes
the names of others. An angel of the Lord was the one who announced to John the
Baptist’s father that a son would be born to him, and he gave him the name.
Luke 1v13-14 (KJV) says “But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for
thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou
shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall
rejoice at his birth.” In a way God who knows the plans He has for people gives
them a name that would accompany that plan, even before they themselves see the
manifestation of it. Genesis 17v4-6 & 15-16 (AMP) says “Nor shall your name
any longer be Abram [high, exalted father]; but your name shall be Abraham
[father of a multitude], for I have made you the father of many nations. And I
will make you exceedingly fruitful and I will make nations of you, and kings
will come from you… And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall
not call her name Sarai; but Sarah [Princess] her name shall be. And I will
bless her and give you a son also by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she shall
be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” Beloved, what is
your name? As believers, we are called children of God.
Prayer
Father we thank You for
the power of words and the power of names. Thank You for calling us by Your
name. Thank You for calling us to be Yours in Jesus name, amen.
