Self-Control
Hello
everyone,
How
are you doing on this day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord.
Primary Text
“For
this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to
goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; …” 2 Peter 1v5-6 (NIV)
“Next,
learn to put aside your own desires …” 2 Peter 1v6 (TLB)
Self-control
is very important for every child of God to have, and is one of the works the
presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer achieves. Proverbs 25v28 (NLT)
tells us that “A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down
walls.” What then is self-control? Some of its synonyms include:
self-discipline, discipline, willpower, restraint, strength of mind, strength
of will. It takes a lot of self-control to turn from what we know is wrong and
to do that which God defines as right. We find a lot of people who get into
serious trouble and ruined themselves and others because they cannot control
their anger, desire for food or sex, jealousy and so on. Proverbs 16v32 (NIV) says “Better a patient
person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.” However
as believers we need to remember that we can increasingly grow in self-control
by the grace of God and the power of His Spirit. 2 Timothy 1v7 (AMP) says “For
God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing
and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of
calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.”
Prayer
Is
there an area you need self-control, why not ask God for help in that area.
