Be sober
Hello everyone,
How are you doing on this day? I hope
well and bubbling in the Lord.
Primary Text
“But the end of all things is at hand:
be ye therefore sober, ...” 1 Peter 4v7 (KJV)
“The end of the world is coming soon.
Therefore, be earnest ….” 1 Peter 4v7 (NLT)
“But the end and culmination of all things has now come near; keep sound minded and self-restrained ….” 1 Peter 4v7
(AMP)
One point this verse highlights is that
the end of the world is coming soon, and we should be sober. Proverbs 5v21
(AMP) says ““For the ways of man are directly before the eyes of the Lord, and
He [Who would have us live soberly, chastely, and godly] carefully weighs all
man’s goings.” To be sober could mean “not intoxicated or drunk” or “quiet or
sedate in demeanor, as persons,” “marked by seriousness, gravity, solemnity,
etc., as of demeanor, speech, etc.: a
sober occasion” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sober?s=t). Those
who are intoxicated might act in ways that they normally wouldn’t when they are
in control or aware of what they are doing.
But the Word of the Lord tells us to be
sober. “For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong
to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay
alert and be clearheaded” 1 Thessalonians 5v5-6 (NLT). One verse many of us are
familiar with is 1 Peter 5v8. The Amplified says “Be well balanced (temperate,
sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours,
the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone
to seize upon and devour.” 1 Peter 1v13 (NIV) also reminds us that “[Be Holy] Therefore, with minds that are
alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when
Jesus Christ is revealed at His coming.” Amen.
Prayer
Heavenly Father I thank You so much for
today. Lord, grant me the grace to follow You soberly and to be sensitive to
the times, and be found rapturable when You return in Jesus name, amen.
