Why do you seek Him?
Hello everyone,
How are you doing on this day? I hope well and
bubbling in the Lord. I have been reading a book called “Desiring God” by Dr.
Dale Fife. A particular portion of it formed the basis of today’s encouragement
i.e. Why do you seek God? Through series of revelations, Dr. Fife writes about
how God wants us to draw from the well of His presence and wants to give
revelations to those who seek Him. However, some begin to use the revelation
they have received to pursue their own purposes and for their own ends. Some,
haven received certain revelations, are content with just that, and do not dig
deep for more. I think more striking for me was the fact that often too, one
can then sacrifice intimacy with God for the pursuit of revelations.
In John 6v24-29 (New Living Translation) we see
Jesus speak to a group of people about what they should be seeking for: “So
when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got
into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for Him. They found Him
on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus
replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with Me because I fed you,
not because you understood the miraculous signs. But
don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy
seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father
has given me the seal of His approval.” They replied, “We want to perform God’s
works, too. What should we do?” Jesus told them, “This
is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one He has sent.”
Here the Lord Jesus de-emphasized people seeking
Him because of perishable things, but asking them to seek the eternal life. John
17v3 (Classic Amplified Version) tells us “And this is eternal life: [it means]
to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You,
the only true and real
God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the
Messiah), Whom You have sent.” We see how the people expressed the desire to do
God’s work, and Jesus saying – believe in the One who He has sent. Let us look
through scripture with the lens of, what the Lord require of us, and would have
us do. Psalm 27v8 (Classic Amplified Version) says “You have said, Seek My face
[inquire for and require My presence as your vital need]. My heart says to You,
Your face (Your presence), Lord, will I seek, inquire for, and require [of necessity and on
the authority of Your Word].”
Prayer
Father, we thank You because You have not asked
us to seek You in vain. Father we ask that you shine Your light on our hearts,
see where are motives for seeking You are all wrong and sanctify them in Jesus
name, amen.
