Training for Godliness

Hello everyone,
How are you doing on this day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord. We thank God for His mercies, His love, His grace over our lives. In 1 Timothy, Paul writes to Timothy. In a particular place, he tells him about a sort of exercise in which he should engage in. Now, this is not bodily exercise – not the gyming, and the running, or the walking, or the “wi-ing” but godly exercise. Now, bodily exercise like those mentioned do require a certain degree of discipline. For one, you have to do it. The basic level being having to make a choice. For instance taking the stairs, instead of the elevator, walking, instead of taking the bus or the car. Sometimes, this exercise has to be scheduled at a time that may be very early during the day, or sometime in the middle of the day, and needs to be “planned” into your schedule. Sometimes you might even have to pay to participate in certain exercises, or even call up some friends to do them with you. Paul writes to Timothy that:

“But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
For bodily exercise profiteth little, but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” 1 Timothy 4v7-8

“But refuse and avoid irreverent legends (profane and impure and godless fictions, mere grandmothers’ tales) and silly myths, and express your disapproval of them. Train yourself toward godliness (piety), [keeping yourself spiritually fit].
For physical training is of some value (useful for a little), but godliness (spiritual training) is useful and of value in everything and in every way, for it holds promise for the present life and also for the life which is to come.” 1 Timothy 4v7-8 (Amplified Bible)

I can imagine some spiritual training that one can undertake in like fasting, praying, singing praises, being obedient to God and His Word, serving in Church e.t.c. These could be things that the first time you tried, you felt so tired, you could not go on. It took a toll on you. And then you were able to go a little longer the next time, and a little longer… your spirit in a sense is being trained to do these things. Or even things like speaking words of grace instead of gossip and backbiting, or spreading rumors, you can train in that too, knowing that the Bible has asked that we speak words of grace that are edifying to the hearers. Are you ready to undergo some spiritual training? You can even have some accountability partners – that make sure you are praying, studying the Word, going to church, serving God e.t.c. Now go out and train, and enjoy doing it in Jesus name, amen.

Have a very blessed day.

P.S: Let us pray for athletes (runners, swimmers, skaters, golfers, wrestlers, boxers, footballers, basketball players, …) all over the world that God will continue to strengthen and keep them from injury, and more importantly, that He would send labourers to them, that they may have an encounter with Him and come to accept Jesus as their Lord and personal Saviour in Jesus name, amen.
