Why forget?
Hello everyone,
How are you doing today? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord.
Primary Text
“But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the
heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.” 2
Peter 3v5 (NIV)
The “they” that is referred to in this verse are those
scoffers/mockers which 2 Peter 3v3 says will rise in the last days, who will
follow after their own flesh “And say, Where is the promise of His coming? For
since the forefathers fell asleep, all things have continued exactly as they
did from the beginning of creation.” 2 Peter 3v4 (AMP). Verse 5 is now telling
us about things these people deliberately forget. For one, they deliberately
forget that “… long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth
was formed out of water and by water.” One question that comes to mind is why
would they choose to forget that? Perhaps because one of their assertions is
that “everything has remained the same since the world was first created.” But
there was a pre-Adamite world, which was destroyed initially (Genesis 1v2,
Psalm 104v5-9, Jeremiah 4v23-26, Isaiah 14v12-14), and even afterwards in
Noah’s time, the world was destroyed by water. That said, 2 Peter 3v5 shows us
the importance of the Word of God, in that through the Word that God spoke, the
world was formed. Hebrews 11v3 (NIV)
says “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so
that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.”
Supplementary Text
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the
earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let
there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good:
and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and
the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first
day. And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let
it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided
the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the
firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening
and the morning were the second day. And God said, Let the waters under the
heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it
was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the
waters called He Seas: and God saw that it was good.” Genesis 1v1-10 (KJV)
