Making thanksgiving the norm

Hello everyone,

How are you doing on this day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord. We thank God for His mercies, His grace and His lovingkindness over us. He is faithful!

So, I got an assignment of sorts to look up verses that contained the “will of God,” and one of the ones that is there is from 1 Thessalonians 5v8 which says:

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (King James Version)

“Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks], for this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the Revealer and Mediator of that will].” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (Amplified Bible)

“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (New Living Translation)

Thanksgiving. Simply giving of thanks in all circumstances, conditions, situations… for the will of God for us in Christ Jesus is to give thanks. We see different places in the Bible where this is done or encouraged. For instance, when the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid in Ezra 3v11, it was recorded that:

“And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD: because He is good, for His mercy endureth for ever toward Israel…”

We thank God because He has made us to share in the inheritance that belong to His people who live in the light (Colossians 1v12); we can thank God for other saints (Philippians 1v3) and Ephesians 5v20 tells us to give thanks to God for everything (e.g. food, family, love, work, school, classes, joy, peace, His Holy Spirit…), in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. In addition, we are encouraged that instead of obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, being amongst us, we should let thanksgiving be there (Ephesians 3v4). You can’t go wrong in giving of thanks. When all else fails and you are thinking, what can I do now, give thanks unto God the Father in the name of Jesus.

Verse for thought:
“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceable and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour,” 1 Timothy 2v1-3 (NIV)
