The Gift of Divers Kinds of Tongues

“ … to another divers kinds of tongues; …” 1 Corinthians 12v10 (KJV)

“To another the working of miracles, to another prophetic insight (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose); to another the ability to discern and distinguish between [the utterances of true] spirits [and false ones], to another various kinds of [unknown] tongues, to another the ability to interpret [such] tongues.” 1 Corinthians 12v10 (AMP)

The Lord Jesus said “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.” (Mark 16v17, KJV). The gift of divers kinds of tongues is “supernatural utterance in other languages which are not known to the speaker.” (Dakes Concordance). This gift of tongues is given by the Holy Spirit and enables the speakers to speak a language that they had not known before. Usually, unless the speaker has the gift of interpretation of these tongues, the speaker is unable to understand what he or she is speaking. However, the speaker is actually speaking to God, which is wonderful. 1 Corinthians 14v2 (AMP) says “For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].”

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.” Acts 2v1-6 (KJV)
