Text
“And in
[exercising] knowledge [develop] self-control,” 2 Peter 1v6 (AMP)
Self-control
is something we as believers need to develop. Indeed in addition to adding
goodness/virtue to our faith, and knowledge to that, we are encouraged to
develop self-control. The scripture shows us certain areas we can particularly
work to control:
Lips:
“In a multitude of words transgression is not lacking, but he who restrains his
lips is prudent.” Proverbs 10v19 (AMP)
Mouth:
“He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips
shall have destructions.” Proverbs 13v3 (KJV)
Appetite:
“While dining with a ruler,
pay attention to what is put before you. If you are a big eater, put a knife to
your throat; don’t desire all the delicacies, for he might be trying to trick
you.” Proverbs 23v1-3 (NLT)
Heart/affections/thoughts: “Above all else, guard your
affections. For they influence everything else in your life.” Proverbs 4v23
(TLB)
Anger/temper:
“A rebel shouts in anger; a wise man holds his temper in and cools it.”
Proverbs 29v11 (TLB)
“It
is better to be slow-tempered than famous; it is better to have self-control
than to control an army.” Proverbs 16v32 (TLB)
Prayer
Is
there an area you need self-control, why not ask God for help in that area?
