The One True God

Hello everyone,

How are you doing on this day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord. We thank God for His goodness, His faithfulness, loving-kindness and tendermercies.

Primary text
“There may be so-called gods both in heaven and on earth, and some people actually worship many gods and many lords. But we know that there is only one God, the Father, who created everything, and we live for Him. And there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom God made everything and through whom we have been given life.” 1 Corinthians 8v5-6 (NLT)

Now Paul here is saying yes, there may be so-called gods and people actually do worship them. I know in my country, there are many gods that people traditionally worshipped and continue to do so up to this day. And there are those who have idols and go to herbalists (sorcerers) to make consultations. These things do happen and they exist. But in reality, there is one God, who is the Father, and it is for Him we live. I was recently told an incident about young zealous Christians who went to evangelize in a village in my country. They arrived there late at night and the ladies washed their clothes and wraps and when they couldn’t find a place to spread it to dry, they spread it on a particular hut (small house usually with a roof made with thatch). The hut belonged to someone who we can call a witch doctor. In the night this witch doctor awoke, and wanted to consult with his three idols but none of them said a thing. In his surprise he ran to the head of witches to tell her what had happened and they tried to find the source of the “trouble.” They discovered there were clothes on his hut. He ran back and removed them, went back to consult his idols and then they spoke. In the morning he asked whose clothes they were and traced it to these Christians who told him they were there to share the gospel. He attended their meeting and gave his life to Christ. For him, he was amazed that because of “mere clothes” the so-called idols that his fathers had worshipped became mute, he must serve this higher power. We see a similar case where the ark of God was taken to the temple of the Philistine god – Dagon, and Dagon fell. Indeed Philippians 2v9-11 (KJV) says “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Hallelujah.

Supplementary Text
“Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon. When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.” 1 Samuel 5v2-5 (NIV)
