Brotherly admonition
Hello everyone,
How are you doing on
this day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord.
Primary Text
But if anyone [in the
church] refuses to obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person
and do not associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. Do not regard him as
an enemy, but simply admonish and warn him as [being still] a brother.” 2 Thessalonians
3v14-15 (AMP)
Here, Paul and the
other writers of this letter to the Thessalonians are saying, we have set forth
certain instructions in this letter for you to follow, but their might be
someone who refuses to obey what is said in it – take note of that person.
Perhaps in your own circle, you know of brethren who know what the Word of God
says, they have heard the sound teachings and exhortations, just as you have,
yet they refuse to obey them – take note of them. It is important to take note
of such people on the one hand to be on guard because they might bring up a
suggestion or an idea which would go against what you know to be true by the
Word of God. Knowing that this person has a different view would therefore keep
you on your guard. Paul also says, do not associate (connect, join together) with
the person. For example, in the verses prior to 14 and 15 above, the
instructions had been concerning those who were idle, disruptive, and
busybodies in the affairs of others. Don’t associate with them therefore means,
do not join them. Remember, evil communication corrupts good manners (1
Corinthians 15v33). Romans 16v17 (NIV) tells us “I urge you, brothers and
sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your
way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.”
However, while we are to take note of these ones, and not associate with them
so they might feel ashamed, we are to warn and admonish them, that is correct
them and show them where they are erring, as you would your brother. They are
not enemies. Hopefully, they would amend their ways.
Supplementary Text
“Brethren, if any
person is overtaken in misconduct or sin of any sort, you who are spiritual
[who are responsive to and controlled by the Spirit] should set him right and
restore and reinstate him, without any sense of superiority and with all
gentleness, keeping an attentive eye on yourself, lest you should be tempted
also.” Galatians 6v1 (AMP)
Prayer
Father, I thank You
for Your Word. I pray that in anyway I am acting or thinking contrary to the
Word of God, have mercy on me. Please expose it and help me to align my ways
totally and completely with Yours in Jesus name, amen.
