David vs. Goliath

Hello everyone,

How are you doing on this day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord. We thank God for the victory that we have in Him in the face of adversity.

Primary Text
“But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you. For we wanted to come to you – certainly I, Paul did, again and again – but Satan blocked our way.” 1 Thessalonians 2v17-18 (NIV)

As believers, we often face spiritual roadblocks as we see in the text above. But we are told to be strong in the Lord and in the Lord and in the power of His might (Ephesians 6v10). David’s fight against Goliath gives us an example of this. We find that David was not afraid of a fight, and it wasn’t because of who he was, because compared to the opposition he faced, he was smaller and not as strong. This brings to mind the scripture that tells us “Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset – rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world.” Indeed the Bible doesn’t tell us to run away from the enemy, but to resist him and oppose him. We also see in the example of David that he was strong in the Lord; calling to mind the victories God had empowered him to win previously.  1 Samuel 17v37 (AMP) recalls David saying “… The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.” David also declared the victory of the battle even before fighting it. That shows great faith! As believers, let us watch what we say, and be sure to rehearse in the ears of the Lord – His words, and those of faith and victory.

Supplementary Text
“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands.” 1 Samuel 17v45-47 (KJV)

Prayer
