Captivity captive!
Hello everyone,
How are you doing on this day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord. Our God is the One who has never lost a battle and can never fail. One of the things which Jesus did when He ascended on high, where He now intercedes for us, and is preparing a place for us, was to lead captivity captive.
Primary Text: Ephesians 4v8
“Wherefore He saith, When He ascended up on high, He led captivity captive, ...” Ephesians 4v8
“Therefore it is said, When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive [He led a train of vanquished foes] …” Ephesians 4v8 (AMP)
“The psalmist tells about this, for he says that when Christ returned triumphantly to heaven after His resurrection and victory over Satan, …” Ephesians 4v8 (NLT)
Captivity means “the state or period of being held, imprisoned, enslaved, or confined”; while captive means “made or held prisoner” (www.dictionary.com). When Jesus died and rose again, He led captivity captive. Meaning that all those things which held people captive, those things or situations, or beings which held people captive, or imprisoned, or enslaved, He took them captive. One commentary reads that – “He conquered those who had conquered us – such as sin, the death, and devil.” Hallelujah. Indeed, it is true that the wisdom of God was unknown to the princes of this world “… for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” 1 Corinthians 2v8. But through Scripture and the Spirit of God, we are aware of all that has been accomplished on our behalf, and we should walk in light of that victory. Amen.
Supplementary Texts
“And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, Which He wrought in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is His body, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all.” Ephesians 1v19-23
“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a shew of them openly, triumping over them in it.” Colossians 2v14-15
Prayer
Father in heaven, we thank You. You are all mighty and powerful. We pray that we may truly understand what is the exceeding greatness of Your power toward us who believe, according to the working of Your mighty power which You wrought in Christ, when You raised Him from the dead, in Jesus name, amen.
