Respect the King
Hello everyone,
How are you doing on this day? I hope well and bubbling in the Lord. In 1 Peter 2v13-16 (AMP) that “Be submissive to every human institution and authority for the sake of the Lord, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, Or to governors as sent by Him to bring vengeance (punishment, justice) to those who do wrong and to encourage those who do good service. For it is God’s will and intention that by doing right [your good and honest lives] should silence (muzzle, gag) the ignorant charges and ill-informed criticisms of foolish persons. [Live] as free people, [yet] without employing your freedom as a pretext for wickedness; but [live at all times] as servants of God.” In verse 17, the Bible goes on to tell us that:
Primary Text
“Show respect for all men [treat them honorably]. Love the brotherhood (the Christian fraternity of which Christ is the Head). Reverence God. Honor the emperor.” 1 Peter 2v17 (AMP)
Now, some of us may say, hmmmm, I don’t have an emperor, or king, but we have rulers in the different places we abide. And we are here encouraged to honor them. The Dakes concordance Bible has this commentary “Honor the emperor or the highest civil ruler, for human government is of God (v13-17, Rom. 13:1-7). Imagine a society where there is no governing body and everyone does as seems good to them? It might be quite chaotic. But let’s remember always to pray for those in authorities (1 Timothy 2v1-2).
Supplementary Text
“Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you.” Romans 13v1-3 (NIV)
Father, we thank You for Your Word and for those in authority. We pray You bless them, keep them, surround them with godly counsel and wisdom, in Jesus name, amen.
